The Lomandra Project and Wendy Jane Sheppard

The third stop on my Healesville shop crawl, The Artist's Lounge revealed two great artists, weaver Adrienne Kneebone and painter Wendy Jane Sheppard.

These fabulous woven shapes are all examples of the work of Adrienne Kneebone.  She recently worked in the Northern Territory for four years on the Pandanus Project, weaving with indigenous artists and learning about their centuries old weaving methods.  This mp3 from ABC Darwin will give you a great idea of what that project was about.

She now lives in Warburton and is keen to bring fibre art to the area.

I would like to work with Indigenous and non-Indigenous makers and weavers to create forms out of the local fibre Lomandra and put Victorian Fibre art back on the map!“  Adrienne Kneebone.

With an exhibition at Three Stories Artspace and a fibre weaving workshop for local artists, Adrienne is well on the way to achieving her aim.  These works are all available through The Artist's Lounge or you may like to contact Adrienne directly via her website.

The Artist's Lounge really is true to its intention- for artists to "take over this town" (Healesville).  It's a happening place- of the artistic kind.  This last week and a bit they have been hosting local artists doing 'their thing' in the shop window. Shoppers have been stopped in their Christmas shopping tracks... pondering the artwork emerging in front of their eyes. While I was there, a group of five artists arrived, having made the trip to Healesville especially to talk to Artist's Lounge 'artist in residence', Wendy Jane Sheppard about her arts practice.  Wendy Jane Sheppard is a participant in the Yarra Valley Open Studios Program. She's passionate about animals especially their care and husbandry by humans. As she worked away in the window she generously talked about every aspect of the work, from the building up of the image and the paint she was using, to the importance of the image for her intellectually. A tiny microcosm of the artist at work.

The artwork and artisan wares available at The Artist's Lounge offer the Christmas shopper the opportunity to buy presents with attitude. Bravo the Artist's Lounge!

Thanks again to the owners of The Artist's Lounge, Ali and Billy for their generous hospitality and for having the courage to follow their dreams.

Woven artwork in this post is Adrienne Kneebone©.
