Red Shed no more

IMG_1029

When the Red Shed was recommended to me in New York late last year, I decided that I'd have to go there. Who would believe that a cafe tucked away in the Yarra Valley would get a mention in the Big Apple?  I decided that it had to be good.  They do a killer breakfast I was told.  I'm quite partial to the killer breakfast.  In fact brekkie is my all time favourite meal to go out for.

So when a dear friend suggested a Sunday morning breakfast catchup we agreed to try it out.  We set off on the 40 minute drive from Warrandyte, enjoying the gorgeous views along the way, all the while chatting incessantly.  For me there was an appetite brewing.  I can't  tell you how much I was looking forward to that killer breakfast by about Yarra Glen.

We arrived at the home of the Red Shed, Medhurst Winery, to a view of the autumnal vines reflected in the giant dam...aaah the Yarra Valley!   Unfortunately it was all down hill from there.  Cafe closed since last December!  How did that happen?  We nabbed the first person we sighted to get an explanation.  He was graciously apologetic but assured us that it would reopen in a couple of weeks as an integral part of the Medhurst Winery.  We stood with tummies grumbling looking at the achingly beautiful view.  Would we like to drown our sorrows with some wine tasting- our messenger inquired. The tragedy is that both my friend and I are non drinkers...so we headed straight for the Innocent Bystander in Healeville to fill our tummies and lick our wounds, only to find that they don't do a killer breakfast.....oh weep!  Though I have to admit that the home made corn fritters were pretty good.

We agreed to keep an eye on the Medhurst Winery website and make a return trip to check out their new cafe...
